Without this, achieving your goals won’t work

Written by Alex Poeter

I want to invite you to think of a big goal you’re currently trying to achieve.  What comes up for you?  Can you see yourself having fully realized your vision?  Can you see and even feel all the details you’d experience if you had achieved this goal?

And if you can’t yet fully visualize the new experience you want to create, what’s blocking you from being able to see the details of your vision?

Often when we want to achieve a goal or make a big change in our life, we don’t go deep enough into the visioning process.  What’s more is that we often create a vision for what we want to experience from a place of limitation: we don’t allow ourselves to explore what we truly want.  Instead, we just develop a vision based on what we could or should create based on fears, doubts and limiting beliefs, but also based on what others expect from us.  However, creating and pursuing a limited vision usually leads to limited results and experiences.  That’s why it’s crucial to take the time to create a vision that is detailed, and that feels truly exciting and inspiring.

If we’re having a hard time being able to fully visualize the achievement of our goal, it’s usually because fears, doubts, or limiting beliefs are getting in the way.  And if we don’t deal with those barriers, they’re likely going to prevent us from succeeding.  This is because if we can’t fully visualize the achievement of our goal, our mind won’t believe that it’s possible.  And if on a deeper level we don’t believe that the achievement of our goal is possible, our actions will keep reflecting this belief.

Here are some tips that can help you with being able to visualize the achievement of your goals:

  • Identify indicators that would prove that you’ve achieved your goal.  Can you clearly see yourself in those scenes, either from the point of the observer or as a participant?  If some pieces trigger doubt or disbelief, what do you need to do to strengthen your confidence and belief?

  • Take tangible steps to make your vision more real by doing some of the things now that you will be doing once you’ve achieved your goal.  You could also discuss your goal with a trusted friend to see how it feels, do research online to gather the information you need to achieve your goal, or go to the physical locations that are associated with your goal.

  • Keep working on your vision by continuing to color in the details.  This is not a one off – a new vision or goal needs to continuously be nurtured and deepened.  This can be done by creating and continuously updating a vision board or maintaining a regular journaling practice.

I’d also encourage you to work with an accountability partner who can support you whenever you run into an obstacle and help you maintain momentum.  The more you keep working on your inner game and refuse to give up, the more the achievement of your goal will become inevitable.
